"Advertisers are focusing more and more on the emerging market of `people who do only what they want to do,"' observes columnist John Leo, "that is, people who yearn to be completely free of all restraint, expectations, and responsibilities." Burger King offers, Sometimes, you gotta break the rules. A shoe company promises their shoe conforms to your foot so you don't have to conform to anything. Says Nike, We are all hedonists and we want what feels good. That's what makes us human. "The point here," explains Leo, "is that while everyone is aghast over blatant sex, violent movies, and gangsta rap, the ordinary commercial messages of corporate America are probably playing a more subversive role"

No small contributor to the expectation problem, the legal profession must accept considerable blame. "There is some form of mass neurosis that leads many people to think courts were created to solve all the problems of mankind," accused former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Warren Burger, saying many lawsuits are "an exercise in futility" best solved by other means.10 Our national "victimization" epidemic is directly related to expectations exploited by the legal profession.

PRESCRIPTIONS FOR CORRECTING OUR EXPECTATION INFLATION

In light of ever-increasing societal expectations, what can we do to counteract these pressures? Many of the possible adjustments have to do with our mindset and lifestyle.
